Turkmenistan Expands Gas Cooperation with Malaysia

Geological exploration and drilling work at large gas blocks in Turkmenistan, for which Malaysian company Petronas has received development rights, could begin as early as December 2026. This was announced by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, according to the New Straits Times.

According to him, the project's implementation will significantly strengthen Malaysia's position in the global gas market and expand the country's energy assets. Petronas Carigali (Turkmenistan) previously signed agreements with state-owned companies Turkmennebit and Khazarneft to develop offshore blocks 19 and 20 in the Caspian Sea, as well as to conduct seismic exploration in the northern sections.

Analytical Commentary

Petronas's expanded participation in Turkmenistan's gas projects reflects the strengthening of the strategic partnership between the two countries, which has been developing primarily in the energy sector in recent years. For Malaysia, Turkmenistan is becoming an important avenue for diversifying its energy assets, reducing dependence on a limited number of suppliers and strengthening the national oil and gas company's position in the international market.

For Turkmenistan, cooperation with Petronas is equally important. Despite possessing some of the largest natural gas reserves in the world, the country seeks to attract international technology, investment, and expertise to develop complex fields, particularly offshore the Caspian Sea. Developing offshore blocks requires significant financial resources and modern technologies, which are available to major international energy companies.

The gas sector remains a key element of Turkmenistan's economy, providing the bulk of the country's export revenue. With the need to expand export routes, Ashgabat is interested in attracting new partners and developing projects that can increase production and create additional opportunities for accessing global markets.

For Malaysia, the development of Turkmen gas assets is also part of a broader energy security strategy. Amid instability in global markets, including risks around the Strait of Hormuz, consuming countries are seeking to expand their supply geography and strengthen their long-term energy sources.

In the future, joint projects between Petronas and Turkmenistan could strengthen energy cooperation between Central Asia and Southeast Asia, as well as enhance Turkmenistan's role as a key gas supplier on the global market.
