The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan is implementing the second phase of a project to restore the Northern Aral Sea.

As a result of the first phase, the water volume in the sea increased by 42%, reaching 27 billion cubic meters. Water salinity decreased nearly fourfold, and the annual fish catch grew to 8,000 tons, according to the ministry's statement.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation has developed a project titled "Regional Development and Restoration of the Northern Part of the Aral Sea." Key measures include increasing the volume and efficiency of water accumulation in the Northern Aral, improving water resource management, developing fisheries and eco-tourism, and enhancing the region’s ecological condition.

A significant step in this direction was taken in 2024, when irrigation specialists directed approximately 2.6 billion cubic meters of water into the Aral Sea. This was made possible through efficient distribution and conservation of water from the Syr Darya River. For comparison, in 2022, only 816 million cubic meters of water reached the Aral.
