ASHGABAT - Turkmenistan has announced its readiness to more actively utilize the potential of its Caspian Sea port infrastructure to develop transport and logistics links within the CIS, Orient.tm reports.
The announcement was made by Serdar Durdyev, Turkmenistan's Chargé d'Affaires in Russia, at a roundtable discussion in the Russian Federation Council dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the CIS.
According to the diplomat, the development of the Caspian region remains a priority in Ashgabat's foreign economic policy. Amid the growing importance of trans-Caspian routes and the search for new logistics corridors between Asia and Europe, Turkmenistan is seeking to strengthen its role as an important transport and transit hub for Eurasia.
A key element of this strategy is the Turkmenbashi International Seaport, considered one of the largest multimodal transport hubs in the Caspian Sea. The port is capable of handling up to 17 million tons of cargo annually and accommodating up to 17 seagoing vessels simultaneously.
Ashgabat notes that modernized port infrastructure creates additional opportunities for expanding cargo flows between the CIS countries, the Caucasus, the Middle East, and Asia. The growing geoeconomic importance of the Caspian Sea and the development of international transport corridors, including East-West and North-South routes, are helping to transform Turkmenistan into one of the key logistics hubs of Central Asia.
Experts note that, thanks to its advantageous geographic location and large-scale investments in transport infrastructure, Turkmenistan is consistently strengthening its position as a key link in Eurasian transit chains, and the Port of Turkmenbashi is becoming one of the main drivers of this process.
