Almaty, Astana, Bishkek, and Tashkent have been included in the list of the most expensive cities in Central Asia, reports the Kursiv LifeStyle portal based on a study of the cost of living index.
The rating from Numbeo is compiled based on surveys of platform users. The index considers six indicators, including prices for groceries, restaurants, transportation, utilities, rent, and overall purchasing power of the population. The figures for New York City with a base index of 100% are taken as the benchmark – the closer to New York's figures, the more expensive the city.
In the first half of 2024, the most expensive cities were Geneva, Zurich, New York, San Francisco, and Boston. In the Numbeo list, Kazakhstan is represented by Almaty and Astana, which took 164th and 176th places, respectively. A total of 218 localities were included in the rating.
