The impact of uranium on public health and the environment, as well as the best global practices for the restoration of territories after the disposal of hazardous waste, were discussed at an international conference in the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe, Ritmeurasia reports.

The International Union of Veterans of Atomic Energy and Industry of the CIS countries acted as the organizers of the event. The forum discussed strategies for solving problems with radioactive mines. Representatives of scientific circles from Central Asian countries participated in the event.

"We are ready to share the experience we have gained in Kazakhstan with all our neighbors and Central Asia, Russia, Belarus. International cooperation is very important here because each country has examples of how to do this," said the First Deputy Chairman of the International Union of Veterans, Baurzhan Duysenbayev.

The conference was dedicated to the Day of Science of the Republic of Tajikistan.

Most of the population of Central Asian countries suffers from the negative uranium legacy. Kazakhstan has the greatest experience in combating such a legacy. It was in this country that the nuclear test site in the Semipalatinsk region was located.

In Soviet times, uranium ore for the needs of the USSR was mined from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. There are still uranium tailings there and they need to be neutralized without fail. This problem cannot be solved without external support, experts say.
